How To Carry Out a Successful Job Interview

Published on 04/09/2017

Hiring the right set of people for your organisation is exceptionally important. These potential candidates would need to normally have the necessary skills/experience and be able to fit in well with your existing business culture if they are to be considered. However, prior to the selection process, you would need to conduct effective interviews, as these will bring you a step closer to finding the best candidate for the job.

With this in mind, we will go through some of the crucial steps you would need to take in order to undertake successful interviews. Let’s look at these below:

Tip 1:  Have your questions ready for the candidate

Before the interview takes place, you would need to ensure you have the right questions ready for the interviewee. New to setting up interviews? Don’t panic, it’s as simple as having the job description and the candidates CV in front of you and formulating your questions based on these two documents.

We would however advise you not to bombard the candidate with a large list of questions. The most successful interviews are concise and to the point. Therefore, try to only prepare 6-8 questions for the interview session.

Tip 2: Create a relaxed atmosphere

When undertaking interviews, you need to think from a candidate’s perspective. Try to remind yourselves how nerve-wracking it can be to go to an interview and meeting a complete stranger. Sometimes you might not get a true representation of someone if his or her apprehension kicks in.

Therefore, it would be a sensible idea to make your interview as casual and informal as you can so you can see what you’re candidate is really like in a more relaxed environment. Our office furniture specialists here at Calibre believe that conducting interviews in a comfortable breakout space would be more beneficial when finding the right candidates. This means, avoid any formal and daunting type of boardrooms for the interview at all costs!

Tip 3: Pay attention to non-verbal communication indicators

This is an interesting one to keep in mind during a face-to-face interview. You can discover more about a candidate’s personality through typical non-verbal communication cues such as body language, facial expressions, posture and eye contact. For example if a candidate can hold a strong gaze with you during the interview then this could mean they are confident individuals.

You do not need to be a professional Psychologist to be able to gauge what an individual is like but remember to keep it subtle otherwise, you might scare the candidate off!

Summary:

It’s fair to say that interviews can be a very stressful experience. The interviewer might worry that the interview isn’t as organised as it should be whereas the candidate might worry that with so much competition around, they might not get the job. Both parties should however leave their worries behind and just enjoy the whole experience whatever the outcome.

Useful Tip For Candidates:

Make a quick scan of the office before and after the interview as this can say a lot about the company. Does it include ergonomic desks and office chairs? Do you see a fancy high-end glass desk in the reception area? If yes, then this is indicative of a well-kept business, which you would surely want to be part of in the future.
