Must Know Facts About Office Furniture:

It’s that time of week again, where we share our collection of must know workplace facts with you. So… here it goes! We thought it would be interesting to try something slightly different this time by going through a list of historic office furniture facts that we got hold of from an insightful infographic we found on Visually. On this occasion however, we will only be going through our top picks from the article.

Historical office furniture fact one:

Have you ever wondered when and how some of the classic products like office chairs, which are still prevalent in the modern workplace even came about in the first place? Well, according to the infographic mentioned above and several other resources on the web, Naturalist, Charles Darwin introduced the office chair concept back in the 1800’s.

He had allegedly placed wheels to his chair to get around his study room quicker. Times have obviously changed, with many employees now being greatly favourable towards the standing desk revolution that has recently come about. However, not too sure if Darwin would have also felt the same way about standing desks back then!

Historical office furniture fact two:

Based on the findings from this infographic it seems like we’ve always been living in a materialistic world. According to this, a sum of £28 million was paid for a designer chair that was purchased by Yves Saint Laurent (YSL), the late French Fashion Designer. That’s impressive and we’re certain it was a very long-lasting office chair too!

Historical office furniture fact three:

Did you know that the term ‘table’ originates from the Latin word ‘Tabula’, which means a plank, or flat piece. It surely isn’t a commonly known fact for many including the Calibre team. However, there is absolutely no harm in discovering some additional fun facts about your office table or any other office furniture items like desk chairs that are used at your organisation.

Historical office furniture fact four:

Many centuries ago, it is believed that only individuals who belonged to upper-class/royal families were the ones that used chairs with backs such as thrones. Conversely, those who had a lower social status were often seen on backless chairs i.e. stools. This is of course a relic of the past because no one in today’s society conforms to such social differences like they did in the ancient times.

Historical office furniture fact five:

We’re certain you’ve heard of sports car racing or maybe even snowmobile racing but have you ever heard of office chair racing? As unusual as it sounds, the reality is that it does happen! In fact, the very first office chair racing championship took place at Bad Koenig-Zell, Germany in 2009. An impressive sum of 70 participants took part in this contest. Now that’s a great fact to remember and share with others!

Summary:

As you probably know by now there is a lot of history behind some of the readily used office furniture items that we use today. We thought it would be enjoyable for our readers to learn more about some of our favourites from the Visualy infographic mentioned at the start. These historic facts, as you can tell, have ranged from where the term ‘table’ initially derived from to affluent designers spending fortunes on designer chairs.

Which one was your personal favourite fact?

We really hope you’ve enjoyed Calibre’s collection of workplace facts this week!
