Breakout Space Etiquette

Breakout space

A breakout space is a space like no other. This is a space which is multi-functional, i.e. it isn’t just for one use. Employees can head to the breakout space for collaborative, perhaps to brainstorm away from the office, so as not to disturb other members of staff who are doing close, detailed work, or it can be used as a space for a time out, perhaps when someone is feeling a little stressed.

Whatever staff use the breakout space for, this is a part of the office which shouldn’t be ignored. Furnishing this area in the best way is vital, and a good way to do that is to look at modular breakout furniture. This type of furniture can then be used for other things, packed away when not in use, and is lightweight enough to move around. If you opt for a colourful decor, or perhaps a chilled out theme, you’ll be able to give stuff the escapism they need, as well as an innovative area for collaboration.

Of course, every space needs rules, and a breakout space is no different. There is unlikely to be enough modular breakout seating for every single person who wants to use the space at any one time, so staff need to space out their visits, and perhaps be aware of when collaboration sessions are going on. Whilst a breakout area generally doesn’t have a booking method, because it’s supposed to be casual, a little common sense in terms of when to visit works wonders!

It’s also important to be quiet when visiting the space, and staff are collaborating, not to be overly loud. Some people visit these areas for five minutes time out!

Creating a comfortable breakout area, perhaps with tub chairs, armchairs and sofas, various stools – if you do need additional seating – is a wonderful addition to any workspace. Do you regularly use a breakout area?
