Can Change in The Workplace be a Positive Thing?

Published on 25/05/2020

There are many situations in life which make it hard to remain positive. We’re facing one of those situations right now, and whilst it’s hard to keep things in perspective sometimes, remaining positive in the face of adversity is a must.

The coronavirus situation has caused many businesses to change the way they work in order to remain open, and in some ways, in order to survive. These are changes that had to be made, otherwise, the reality would be very bleak indeed. The problem is, by making these changes, employees are likely to feel a little out of their depth, perhaps even anxious and worried about the future.

Of course, the current situation has everyone feeling that way, but managers can instil a sense of positivity into their employees by managing change in the right way

Check out this infographic which talks about how positive thinking overall can help to boost the wellbeing of your employees.

Of course, not all change is a bad thing. Whilst the situation that causes the change might be quite negative, there are positives that can come out of it. For instance, many businesses have asked their employees to work from home for the time being. At first, this change can be terrifying; working from home isn’t as easy as most people think and the reality of it can be quite eye-opening. However, after a short while of actually working from an office desk in your home, you might find that you actually enjoy the experience and want to continue with it over the long-term.

We’re also being forced to find innovative ways to collaborate, often via Zoom or other video calling platforms. These are also things we can continue with after the situation we’re currently facing is over.

Change forces you to think differently and puts you in situations that you would never have been in previously. As a result, you learn new approaches and ways to do things, which could actually turn out to be very beneficial for your working future.

Sure, change can be scary and it’s not always beneficial; sometimes it doesn’t work out. A high quality manager knows the importance of monitoring any change that has been implemented and reviewing it on a regular basis. It’s vital to talk to your employees and find out how they’re doing, what they think, and to gain an insight into any suggestions they think could improve the situation. Being closed-minded is not the way forward.

Trying to see the positive in difficult situations is one of the best ways to get through it, but in terms of a regular workplace change, seeing the positive and trying to make changes to things that perhaps aren’t working is the way forward. Not every change is negative, but not every change is positive either. It’s about giving it time and trying not to judge it before you’ve had a chance to test it out for a long enough amount of time.

The problem is that morale can easily be affected by any change. Humans don’t like change. It’s really that simple. The change might turn out to be the best thing that ever happened, but it’s likely to be disliked at first; that’s just the way we all are! Managing a change carefully can reduce the likelihood of morale being affected, which is vital when you consider the morale is directly linked to productivity.

Hopefully, the situation we’re all facing will start to abate very soon, but in the meantime, trying to keep on the positive side of the scale is vital.
