Home Office Needing a Little Extra Sparkle?

Published on 17/11/2019

Working from home is a great choice for many people, but it does hinge on the ability to create a suitable working environment and to avoid distractions.

A regular office environment needs to be moved around regularly, in order to keep things fresh and to bring new energy, and the same goes for a home office too.

This means identifying trendy office furniture which might bring a fresher feel to your space and thinking about how to arrange everything in the most productive way. The issue with a home office, however, is that you’re restricted in terms of space. It’s not a good idea to start encroaching on your living environment, because that’s when home and work start to clash and your balance is thrown out of whack. Instead, freshening up your home office simply means moving things around a little and added in a new burst of energy.

If You Have A Spare Room

If you have a spare room and you use it for your home office set up, then you have a little more freedom in terms of how to add in a little extra sparkle and energy.

Why not redecorate in a shade which is known to boost creativity and ideas? Think about yellows, blues, or greens. These are easy to streamline into a home environment and they don’t have the regular ‘work’ feel. That is the ideal way to think when creating a quality home office environment.

You could have a feature wall within your office, e.g. wallpaper with a pattern and paint on the rest, or simply highlight the window, to make sure plenty of natural light makes its way inside. Have some plants here and there to purify the air and help you concentrate better.

Having a spare room means that you have a major advantage when it comes to working from home. You have space which you can close the door on at the end of the day and the psychological effects of that are actually more far-reaching than you might think. This means you have an effective separation between your home life and your work life.

Of course, you could also think about purchasing some new furniture if you have the budget to do so. You will be able to find plenty of cheap office desks which are perfect for a home office, whether large or small.

If You Don’t Have a Spare Room

If you don’t have the luxury of a spare room and your home office is integrated into your living space then you are a little more limited in terms of how to change things, because it may mean changing your entire house decor!

If your office is in a corner of your dining room, for example, you can’t redecorate just that corner, without it standing out too much. If you have a home office like this, you need to make it a streamlined version of your space, to avoid it being too obvious. Again, it’s the psychological effect that means your work isn’t sticking out like a sore thumb when you’re sat on the sofa of an evening, trying to relax!

In this case, work out how you can blend everything in a little better. How about box files which are decorated in the same wallpaper or paint as your walls? This will make them literally blend into the background! You could purchase new office storage units which can be utilised in other ways, e.g. you can have flowers or a plant on top of them.

You should also think carefully about the type of office chair you have in a home office. You don't want this to be too profession and office-y because it will stand out far too much. On the other hand, you need it to be comfortable and supportive whilst you're working. Mesh chairs are a good option here.

At the end of the day, adding a little sparkle to a home office simply means moving things around and creating fresh energy.
