How Does Flexitime Actually Work?

Flexitime

Flexible working arrangements are on the rise in the modern office environment and that is great news for anyone wishing to achieve a greater home and work life balance. One of those arrangements is flexitime.

Despite the fact that everyone has heard of it, not everyone understands how it works. The good news is that it is really quite easy once you get used to it, and you can easily make flexitime work for you.

The simplest way to describe flexitime is:

  • You will have a set number of hours you need to work over a week, e.g. Monday to Friday
  • Provided you work those hours, you are good to go
  • You can start at whatever time you want and finish at whatever time you want
  • However, you must be present in the office, at your corporate office desk during core hours, which vary from business to business
  • Core hours are often around the lunch time rush, or the busiest time for that specific office. These are to ensure that the office is staffed at this time as much as possible.
  • There may be arrangements in place that ensure the office is fully staffed within departments, e.g. a set number of people work flexitime that week and a set number don’t, etc. Again, this varies from business to business and depends on staffing needs

Flexitime is a great way to have it all – enough time at your office chairs to get your work done, but the freedom to do what you need to do outside of work without the stress.

Do you work flexitime?
