There are many buzz words around the traditional office and business world at any one time, but for society in general ‘equality’ and ‘diversity’ are certainly two common ones. Of course, we shouldn’t have to have the conversation at all, because equality and diversity should simply be a general part of our lives, which is accepted as the norm, because it is exactly that – the norm.
Everyone should be treated fairly and equally regardless of any part of themselves or their background.
Check out this video for a quick introduction on the subject.
Businesses need to ensure that they encourage equality and diversity within their workplace. How does this affect morale? It all comes down to ensuring that you offer the same opportunities to all, regardless of their sexual orientation, their gender, the colour of their skin, their place of birth, any disability they may have, or anything else which could be described as a ‘difference’. It also means treating everyone fairly and in the same way. Morale is on the rise when you do these two things, because everyone feels safe, valued, and that they have the chance to take opportunities as they arise.
So, when you’re sat around boardroom conference tables, everyone should have the same opportunity to input ideas and be heard. When you’re considering staff for promotion, anyone who is qualified should be put forward, based only on their ability and nothing else. Similarly, when you’re hiring staff, it should come down to ability and qualifications, and nothing else.
A high end office is a diverse and equal place. It is a place where everyone is welcome and everyone feels comfortable.
