Breakout space

Do you have a breakout space currently? If you have no idea what we’re talking about then the answer is probably no!

A breakout space is something you seriously need to think about installing in your workplace. Not only does a breakout space give your staff somewhere to go when they need to blow off steam, have a five minutes’ time out, calm themselves down, or chill out for a moment, it is also a great place for collaboration and idea sharing.

Once upon a time all brainstorming was done around the conference table, but these days more and more employers are understanding that creativity can’t be forced, and a breakout space gives the ideal chilled out office seating arrangement, whilst being a spot which is multifunctional at the same time.

A quality breakout space has to be different to your regular office environment, otherwise the feel and vibe is the same. You need this space to be inspiring but also relaxing, stimulating yet calm at the same time. It’s a difficult line to walk, but you can do it with the right amount of planning and some stylish, affordable office furniture to boot.

If you already have a breakout space, does it do what it says on the tin? Does it give your staff the space they need, and do you find great ideas coming from it? If not, it’s time to give it a revamp. So, how can you improve your current breakout space, or take notes to create your own, new space?

It comes down to the small details, but they make a huge difference.

  • Seating – The seating in your breakout space needs to be fun and bright. This space is designed to be inspiring so think about colours but also think about comfort. Tub chairs are ideal, because they look different and they’re more relaxed in general. The fact that air can easily circulate around those sat in them also helps with the comfort factor. You could also think about modular seating alternatives for a real boost of luxury.
  • Tables – What type of tables do you have in your breakout space currently? It’s best to avoid formal desks with this type of space and instead go for stand height tables, tables with benches, or multifunctional office booths for successful brainstormings.
Booths are ideal for those who want to talk about more sensitive issues, or those who want to chill out instead.
  • Decorative features – A breakout space isn’t complete without a few decorative features, so think about thinks like plants, water features, and other natural elements. These help to create a tranquil space, but they’re also great for boosting focus.
Of course, you could go the other way and look into colourful decors instead, perhaps with interesting wall art.
  • Refreshment facilities – If you want people to relax and collaborate you need to give them refreshments to make the whole process easier. So, a water fountain, or a small fridge packed with fruit juices maybe.
You could have a vending machine if you want to offer snacks.

Multifunctional breakout furniture

pdating your breakout space basically means giving it a freshen up and looking at where you can make small changes, which will go on to make a major difference. There are many cool office seating choices you can look into, such as benches, stools and fabric covered blocks perhaps.

Ensuring that your space is the tranquil and inspiring spot you want it to be might also need a few rules in place.
Whilst we’re not suggesting you pin a list to the wall with all the dos and don’ts, make sure that everyone is aware of what the breakout space is for and how to behave once in there. Call it breakout etiquette, with most of it really being about common sense and respect for others.
