Is a Good Manager Always 'Visible' in The Office?

Published on 15/10/2019

There are many elements that make a good manager, but does this include being in and around the office at all times?

Some managers are based inside the open-plan office itself, sat at their high end office desks. This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending upon the type of manager they are. If they’re causing employees to feel like they’re being watched, this could detrimentally affect morale. However, being too absent from the office can be negative too.

So, what is the best source of middle ground?

Being visible in the office can mean checking in regularly, having an open-door policy so that staff can talk to their manager when they need to, and having regular team meetings around the boardroom furniture. A good manager doesn’t necessarily need to be right in the heart the office, but they do need to have a handle on what’s happening.
