Today our quick insights discussion will be based on hot-desking in the workplace. There aren’t many topics which are likely to cause as much of a split as hot-desking. Some love it, some hate it, some don’t even know what it is! What’s your take on hot-desking?
For those who aren't 100% sure, hot-desking is a method of working within an office, whereby nobody has an assigned desk. Where will they sit? Well, you make the decision when you arrive that morning, and you choose your office desks according to the work you have to do, e.g. collaboration, quiet work, etc.
We stumbled upon this video, in which the reporter really doesn’t like hot-desking. See what you think, do you agree?
This type of office furniture design layout is becoming more and more common. You’ll see from the video that two out of three US companies surveyed are looking to move to the hot-desking system by 2020. From that, you have to consider the benefits, but what about employees who are resistant to the change? This is a real problem with hot-desking, because as in the video, many view it as ‘office musical chairs’.
Then we have the issue of storage when using a hot-desking system. There are many things to think about before using this system in your own office, but if the future is about hot-desking, perhaps it’s time we embraced the change, rather than running away from it?
