No More Lunch at Your Desk!

Published on 31/03/2021

Are you guilty of eating your lunch at your office desk?

Do you do it every day, or just occasionally?

Whichever option fits your situation, you need to stop eating your lunch at your desk, get up, go somewhere else, and have a break!

It’s such a common thing to do but it’s so damaging on so many levels. Breaks are there for a reason and when you’re sat at your office chair, you’re tempted to continue working. Even if you’re not tempted at all, someone may come over to you with a work query or a request to do something, and because you’re in your working position, you may feel duty bound to just carry on. By doing that, you’re not getting the break you need.

Breaks aren’t a luxury, they’re actually a very firm necessity. Without regular breaks, you’re going to find it very difficult to concentrate and you’ll actually make more mistakes. That means your productivity levels will drop through the floor. It’s not possible to focus for a long period of time; your brain may be sophisticated but it’s not a never-ending machine!

So, make sure that you leave your desk to eat your lunch and that you go somewhere you can chill out and perhaps even get some exercise after you’ve eaten. Also, refrain from talking about work! For the hour or half an hour you get for lunch, you need to switch off from anything work-related and have a total break.

Of course, it also matters what you eat on your break. If you eat heavy, fatty foods, you’re not going to find it easy to concentrate and you’ll feel too full to focus. On the other hand, if you eat foods which are packed with all the vitamins and minerals your brain needs, you’ll avoid that mid-afternoon slump and be full until dinner.

Getting up from your desk on a regular basis throughout the day is important. Active working cuts down on your chances of developing severe health problems and means that you’re far more likely to be able to complete your to-do list that day. When it comes to spending your lunch breaks away from your desk, there really is no room for debate.
