The Far-Reaching Effects of Decluttering Your Office

Hands up who has a rather messy desk.

Let’s take that a little further and find out how many of you have a rather messy office in general.

Don't worry if you’re nodding your head, there is an answer ready and it comes in the form of decluttering!

Until you have completely decluttered a space and streamlined the way it looks and works, you won’t understand the word ‘satisfied’. It’s a truly satisfying feeling to get rid of things that you don’t need anymore, get rid of old office furniture which might be broken, streaming everything and create a gleaming space behind.

Yes, satisfying is the word.

Just because decluttering is often referred to as ‘spring cleaning’ that doesn’t mean you have to save this activity for a specific time of year. You can declutter at any time and it’s a fantastic way to boost mood and productivity at the same time.

They say that a messy desk is ideal for creativity, but it’s not something many people really buy into. Surely a tidy desk means a tidy mind? And surely a tidy mind is in a better space to come up with new and creative ideas?

Whichever side of the argument you belong to, decluttering your office space can certainly allow your employees to work in a more effective way.

If you’re not sure where to begin, why not start with the desks? Check out this video which talks about how to clean and declutter an office desk and how to maintain it afterwards.

As you can see, it’s actually not that difficult! You should then expand that entire thought process to the rest of your space, ensuring that everything is tidy and free of clutter.

What Are The Advantages of Decluttering?

You might be wondering what the point of this is; if you can simply get on with your work, whether you’re messy, your colleagues are messy, or the space is generally full of items nobody really needs. Well, it does matter, because a tidy space is going to run much smoother and fewer mistakes are going to be made as a result. You’ll also find that items go missing far less often too.

To streamline it all down (because we’re feeling in a streamlining kind of mood), here are the advantages of decluttering your office.

  • Decluttering a physical space also helps to declutter the mind, which allows you to work more effectively and be more productive as a result
  • You will find items that you never realised you had or items which you thought you had lost
  • You can get rid of anything which is broken or out of style, and replace it with better items, to give you a brand new contemporary office design
  • Being able to find what you’re looking for will mean you work more effectively and you don’t make as many mistakes, or lose items as you’re working
  • It’s far less frustrating to work in a clean and tidy office, compared to a messy office
  • Visitors into your space will be impressed with a decluttered and tidy office; they won’t be so impressed with a messy office as it gives the impression that the standard of your work is equally as haphazard

As you can see, there are some major advantages to having a clear-out and dedicating yourselves to maintaining the space in the days moving forward. Aside from anything else, surely a clean and tidy office is far more satisfying to work in than one which is constantly filled with paper, rubbish and general messiness? It’s not easy to concentrate when you’re surrounded by junk, after all!

Take the time to declutter area by area, cutting down on the impact of such a huge task. By the end, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner!
