The Importance of Welcoming New Starters Properly

Published on 27/06/2022

Office recruitment takes a large amount of time, effort, and money. That means you need to make sure that you tick every single box along the way correctly.

Once you recruit a new employee, the work isn’t over. You need to make sure that you welcome them correctly, you help them settle in, and you look after them during those tentative first few days and weeks.

Without this, you may find that your new employee will get the completely wrong first impression of you as a manager and they may start to question their decision to accept the job.

Attracting the best talent is one thing, but holding onto them is quite another. It often comes down to the small details, i.e. treating people with kindness and respect, rather than impressing them with huge business models and technology.

When your employee starts their first day in the job, you need to go easy on them and give them time to feel their way into the office. A huge part of settling in is feeling comfortable at their office desk, talking to their new colleagues, and gaining the confidence to speak up around the modern boardroom tables. This cannot be rushed.

Check out this infographic which gives an interesting guideline on the first 90 days in the job.

Your new employee might be keen to impress from the get-go but you have to make sure that you give them time to find their feet. New software packages take time to get used to, working patterns can sometimes be tricky to grow familiar with, and starting to work with a brand new team of employees often takes some time to settle down.

Give your new employee time and make sure that they know you’re there for them every step of the way. Your office door should always be “open” - metaphorically if not literally. You might also like to appoint an office mentor for them, so they have someone they can go to if they want to ask quick questions or find out how something is done.

By helping your employee settle in, even if it takes a little longer than you might have hoped, you’re doing a lot to ensure they stick with your company over the long-term.
