Trends Vs Personality - Which is More Important?

Published on 28/01/2022

When it comes to designing your office, which do you think is more important - fitting in with office design trends or going with your office personality?

Of course, it can be hard to identify a collective personality when you have a large office full of employees, but your business as a whole has a general vibe. So, do you think you should design your office to sum that personality up or should you go for something more trend-based?

There is no rule that says you have to go with trends. The same goes for clothing - if it doesn't suit, you just don’t opt for it. But, first impressions really do count for something. So, when a customer, client, or prospective employee walks into your office, they need to get the right feel of your business. If you design your office and it speaks about your business in a way that really isn’t who you are, they’re going to be nothing short of confused.

When looking to redesign your office it's always a good idea to consult your employees. They’re the ones who sit at their office desks day in, day out, so they know what will work versus what won’t. By consulting them on major changes such as this, you’re also showing them that you care about their opinions and the environment you’re creating for them. That will make them feel valued and will increase workplace morale.

At the end of the day, trends come and go, but personalities don’t tend to change. Your business and what it’s about will always remain the same. It might ebb and flow a little but overall, you’ll still have the same core values. Yet, trends will go out of fashion and something else will follow it. If you go for something wildly fashionable, yes it will look great for the short-term, but what about when it’s no longer desirable in the office design fashion world? You’ll look out of date and that will reflect up on your business - those in the know about such matters may assume that your business is equally as out of date. That’s not he impression you want to put forth.

So, when looking at office design ideas, it’s a good choice to go with what feels right for you. Don’t assume that you have to follow trends just because somebody says it’s fashionable. Go with something which looks great, is comfortable and functional, and sums up what your business is about.
