What Does Your Office Desk Reveal About You?

Published on 23/03/2018

What we wear, how we do our hair, how we decorate our home, and the car we drive, these all show off a little of our own personalities. This is part and parcel of life, and it is a way of expressing who we are. Of course, it also comes down to how we like to live our lives, e.g. if we’re messy, tidy, or somewhere in the middle.

What is your office desk like?

Are you someone who never has a post it note out of place, or do you work in something resembling an organised mess?

One rule doesn’t fit all; some people can’t work in mess, whilst others thrive!

But, with all of this in mind, think about the office desks in your office, and think about what it says about the people who work at them. It’s an interesting subject!

Let’s explore this is a little further.

Mr or Mrs Clutter & Mess

Do you have all manner of random pieces of memorabilia strewn across your desk? Do you have plush toys sat on the top of your monitor, magnets stuck to the side of your PC box, and a large amount of paper seeming to cover most of your work surface? You are a messy worker, but if you get the job done, does it matter?

Of course not!

It’s likely that there is a fair amount of post unopened on your desk, quite a large amount of paper in your ‘in’ tray, and random notes everywhere. You’re likely to lose things quite easily, and if something goes missing within the office, it can often be found somewhere within the midst of your cluttered up desk!

If your cluttered desk reflects the rest of your office, maybe it’s time to think about hiring a contract office cleaning service, giving you one less job to do! Professional cleaning services can be a great way of re-organising your office environment, giving you the space to work to your full potential. This will certainly be a great idea for senior management, who often get swamped with huge piles of paperwork over the week.

Mr or Mrs Minimalist

You are likely to have a sleek luxury office desk, and an executive office chair, and you are likely to be able to see every inch of it, as your desk is never less than immaculate!

You like to only have the necessary equipment on your desk, and you prefer to work electronically, rather than with paper-based tasks. You’ll make use of office storage in a similarly minimalistic way, only keeping what you really need, and storing away the things that aren’t immediately needed in your day to day working life. You are organised, you never miss a deadline, and you are always on the look out for new, modern ways to work.

Mr or Mrs ‘I Love Post It Notes’

The height of organisation, you love to write lists, and it’s likely that your desk and monitor are covered with post it notes! You organise yourself via your lists, and you get everything done on time, because you’re so set on deadlines and ticking things off your lists.

If anyone stands to have a chat at your desk, it’s likely they’ll come away with a post it note in their hand too, with you having given them some instructions on their next task! You love office stationary, and if there is a new pen on the market, or a cute notebook, you’re probably on the look out to buy it!

Mr or Mrs ‘I Don’t Care About Personal Space’

If you find yourself spreading out over someone else’s desk, as well as your own, then you are unfortunately Mr or Mrs ‘I Don’t Care About Personal Space’! You need room to manoeuvre, and you can’t work within small, limited spaces. You will spread your paperwork as far as you can, in order to give yourself more space, and if someone finds a coat, bag, or other belonging somewhere else in the office, it’s likely to be yours!

You’re likely to be quite eccentric, someone who is popular in the office, and someone who comes up with great ideas for work. Despite that, your penchant for spreading out might not make you popular all the time!

The way we live our lives and the way we express ourselves to the outside world certainly show off parts of our personalities and our eccentric quirks. You’re likely to be known as the ‘guy who spreads out’, or the ‘girl with the post it notes’, and this is no bad thing! It is part of who you are, and when you are at work, of course you need to express your personality, as you would in your normal out of work life too.

Of course, it’s important to rein in any annoying habits that your work mates might not appreciate, but we’re all grown ups here, so you probably don’t need to be told that! The way you express yourself at work also has a direct correlation on the way you work, and how effective you are. If you are someone who cannot work in a messy environment, you’re not likely to thrive if your desk is full of clutter; if you’re someone who can’t work when everything is super clean and tidy, you’re not going to go so well with a modern, paper-less route.

Put simply, we need to find our own way to work, and we need to show our personalities by doing that too. Our desk and how we set it up is vital to this aim, and there are many different furniture options out there which allow us to find the best working environment, such as many options for London office furniture too.
