How does the word ‘appraisal’ make you feel? Does ‘staff development review’ make you feel any better?
The problem is that most employees are quite nervous about the idea of having their annual appraisal or review, when in reality, these are fantastic development opportunities for both sides.
Of course, there are dos and don’ts of appraisals, in order to ensure these are done in the right way. You wouldn’t sit down at a boardroom table for 10 people when conducting an appraisal - that would set the wrong tone and a rather formal and forbidding feel from the get-go! Instead, go for a more informal setting, such as a glass office desk with a cup of coffee to calm the nerves.
Only when staff feel comfortable are they able to really open up, and the same can be said for the manager too.

When an appraisal is done correctly, it can be a fantastic way for employees to talk about issues they have, and to create a plan which helps them to reach their potential, e.g. identify training courses they might like to attend. It’s also an opportunity to talk about issues, such as conflict between employees, or perhaps a staff member might feel their operator chair isn’t comfortable and they really want to change it. These things are easier to talk about when the setting is less stuffy, and more informal. Get it right and you can help your employees to develop their skills and knowledge, therefore benefitting the business too.
