Bring Nature into Your Office Design

Published on 10/08/2017

The environment we work in has a pivotal influence on our productivity and wellbeing. By introducing natural elements into the workplace, productivity can be improved by up to 15%.

Whilst good ergonomic design plays an important part in any office design, other factors are also significant. Studies have shown that bringing nature into workplace in terms of plants and natural lighting is beneficial to productivity and wellbeing.

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology states the introduction of office plants in the workplace increases staff satisfaction, improves concentration, memory retention and perceptions of air quality. Office spaces that include indoor plants also enhance creative performance and innovative thinking.

In addition, sick absences have been found to reduce. This is because rooms containing plants contain 50-60% fewer airborne moulds and bacteria. Peace lilies, Spider plants, orchids and rubber plants are just some of the plant varieties that can improve air quality and are an attractive addition to our office desks and break out areas.

Natural Light

Access to natural light in the workplace is a problem for many employees. In a recent European wide study, nearly half of those questioned stated they had no access to natural light. A further 7% had no access to any windows during their working day. In fact, Lancashire based Electrical specialists IDES UK have also addressed this issue in their recent post

The importance of natural light cannot be underestimated. We spend approximately 90% of our time indoors. Natural light increases alertness and gives a boost to our attention span and reduces stress levels.

The introduction of a glass desk can help to reflect natural light and brighten any workspace.  Where possible, office chairs and desks should be positioned to make the best use of natural light, particularly near a window where possible. This ensures employees can take advantage of natural daylight to prevent eye strain and the glare of too much artificial lighting.

Full spectrum lighting can be used to improve visual clarity, mood and alertness in spaces where there is no access to natural light. During the winter months, light boxes can aid people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).So, if you are planning to rethink your office design, consider carefully how you can incorporate nature into your office furniture and office layout
