How to be The Best Mentor

Published on 09/10/2019

If you want to be an expert in your role and have future progression to look forward to, finding a mentor is a good option. Of course, in a working environment, many employees are assigned a mentor to help them get to grips with the job and learn the skills and knowledge required to succeed.

If you want to be a high quality mentor yourself, you first need to assess whether you have the communication skills for the job and whether you have sufficient knowledge yourself. You don’t have to be a manager to be a mentor, but you do need to have a high degree of experience and knowledge in the role you’re going to be mentoring.

What else? Quality listening skills, the ability to manage your workload and be able to answer questions and guide another person, and the ability to inspire others.

It’s a good idea to think about using modular office desks when conducting mentoring sessions, as these can be moved around, and allow your mentee a certain amount of independence during the rest of their time. You don’t necessarily need them to be sat next to you all the time!
