How to Help a Stressed Out Colleague

Published on 23/07/2019

Part and parcel of working as a team is the ability to understand when one member of that team is struggling.

You’ve surely heard the saying “there’s no ‘i’ in team”, and that’s a truth. Ensuring that everyone is working together and to the same level is vital if businesses are to thrive. With that in mind, it’s important to be on the lookout for any team members who might be suffering from stress.

If you notice that one of your office desking neighbours seems overwhelmed or unable to deal with the workload they have, what can you do?

Here are a few ideas.

  • Ask if they want to sit and have a coffee on the reception sofas, and approach the problem, asking if they are okay or need any help
  • Take on tasks that you can manage, to help relieve their workload
  • Let them know that you’re there to help if they need it, or simply to talk
  • Keep them smiling by being a friendly face

All of these simple measures work wonders for someone who is sat at their desk feeling overwhelmed with stress.

Can you think of any other useful ways to help a stressed out colleague?
