Diversity Within The Workplace

These days more than ever before, we’re forced to talk about subjects such as diversity and equality in the workplace. Encouraging and promoting diversity within every single workplace is a must do, and one of the pillars of an effective, high end office environment.
But, how can you do it?

Here are a few quick pointers:

  • Don’t be afraid to talk about differences – It’s perfectly fine to acknowledge differences between people, provided this doesn’t become a way of identifying them, and it’s not done in a derogatory way. By talking about differences, we can learn from them and become more accepting overall. This includes everyone in the workplace, including management sat at their executive desks.
  • Offer diversity training –Diversity training should be part of the mandatory rolling training programme for all staff.
  • Ensure that staff are given opportunities based on their talents and ability – Surely it goes without saying, but regardless of gender, age, or any other ‘difference’, staff should be given the correct opportunities based upon their ability, talents, and their potential, with no bias evident.
  • Ensure the office culture is inclusive – Monitor the vibe in the office and right any issues quickly.
  • Ensure collaboration is effective and varied – Move your office furnishings around occasionally, to ensure everyone gets a chance to work with other employees.

Giving training to staff and ensuring the culture of the workplace is completely equal will ensure everyone is treated fairly and equally, regardless of any diversity issue present. When staff are collaborating, everyone should be heard equally, and when new, international employees are hired, support should be given to ensure they settle in quickly. These aren’t rocket science areas, but they are often overlooked and can impact on diversity.
