The Dangers of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)

Repetitive strain injury

We all know that sitting for too long can cause back pain, neck pain, and sciatica, but there is another health-related risk associated with office work - repetitive strain injury, or RSI.

Sitting at your office tables for too long, typing at a keyboard and using generally repetitive movements can cause pain, swelling, throbbing, and pins and needles in the arms, elbows, hands, fingers, wrists, neck, and even the shoulders. Whilst most people associate RSI simply with the wrists, it’s a far larger problem, and can also be caused by bad posture in general.

Alongside carpal tunnel syndrome, RSI makes life at work very miserable indeed, and can mean that your contemporary office working experience is a rather poor one. This does nothing for morale, and as these repetitive movements simply continue, the pain will also carry on.

From a business point of view, check out this rather shocking infographic, talking about the cost of RSI in monetary terms.

The only way to avoid RSI is to ensure that you take regular breaks from your modular office desk, perform stretches and be mindful of any aches and pains you feel. RSI is certainly painful, but with awareness and management it can be overcome.
