3 Ways You Should Never Give Feedback to an Employee

Published on 18/09/2019

There may come a time when you need to give specific feedback to an employee. This could be positive feedback, or it could be that you need to ask them to do something a little differently, or maybe not to do something at all.

It can be hard as a manager to give feedback because of course, you don’t want to upset your employee and therefore cause their morale to dip.

If you want to ensure this doesn’t happen, you need to avoid the common feedback-related pitfalls.

Never give feedback to an employee in the following three ways:

  • In front of others - Never sit around the modern boardroom tables with other team members and point out the things someone is doing incorrectly. This is something which should be done privately
  • Concentrating solely on the negative - Mix up comments with positives too, to ensure your employee doesn’t feel everything is totally negative
  • In an aggressive way - Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, even you! That means ensuring you’re not giving feedback in an aggressive or condescending way. Speak on a human to human basis!

Using furniture such as booths will ensure you can give the necessary feedback in private, and by ensuring that you are positive and encouraging, you will avoid morale issues.
