Why do Appearances Matter so Much?

Published on 30/11/2018

Is it better to have an office, which is functional and plain, or an office which is functional and looks fashionable?

That might sound like a ridiculous question, because surely the keyword in all of that is ‘functional’? Well, yes, functional is very important, but look at it this way, would you rather work in an office that was stylish and sleek, or one, which was dusty and old? It’s a no brainer, right?

Appearances Speak Volumes

We live in very appearance-centered times, and as humans, we’re geared towards things, which look shiny. That also goes for our regular office furniture choices. Morale is likely to be much higher within your office if you have new bespoke office furniture, which not only suits the needs of your employees, but also looks great too.

You could also take this thought towards home decor. Why do you think people decorate their living rooms and bedrooms from time to time? Because they want a change, something new. In addition, when it’s done, they’re proud of it and want to spend more time there. The same goes for office environments, including conference rooms and reception areas, canteens and breakout spaces. The nicer it looks, the easier it is to work in, the more people want to spend time there.

So, with the New Year coming our way, are you ready for an office revamp of sorts? Do you think it’s time to change up your office decor and move things around a little? Do you need to think about how much space you have in your office and what you can do with it? Now is the ideal time.

Your changes don’t have to be huge, they can be subtle. As long as you opt for quality, you’re getting the same results. For instance, if your conference room needs an overhaul, it could be as simple as purchasing a new conference table and working around it, e.g. painting the walls for a fresher feel. Revamps don’t have to be total changes; they can be odd amendments, which have a huge impact.

Vain or Sensible?

Are we vain for wanting an attractive working environment? No. Just like we’re not vain for wanting a nice living room, an attractive-looking bedroom, or a stylish kitchen. When something looks good, when something is easy to use, the combination is powerful.

In terms of morale, your employees are also much more likely to want to be in that office space, and you’re showing them that you want to create an attractive and comfortable space for them too. When you feel valued in this way, your morale is higher, productivity is increased, and well, profits come the way of the business.

Of course, it’s not all about morale and making the space look good for employees, it’s also about making the space look good for visitors. When an office is clean, stylish, and organised, visitors will automatically assume that the service you provide to them will be just as quality. First impressions are vital. We’ll say it time and time again. In a world where competition is rife and fierce, businesses need to do everything they can to get the edge. A stylish and well-run office environment could be the difference between a client deciding to do business with you, or go to the office downstairs instead.

Assess Your Space

The first thing you need to do is look at the current space you have and decide what changes you would like to make. Next, you need to understand whether your budget will stretch to everything, you want to achieve. Check out London office furniture choices to find pieces, which fit your budget, and from there, be creative. Perhaps you just need a lick of paint and to move things around, maybe you can create zones within your existing office space, or maybe you need a total style change. Research new designs; think about whether they will fit in with your office and the general vibe of your business.

Why not encourage your staff to become involved? Ask them what they would like to see, and what type of new furniture choices would help them in their jobs.

Whilst it might be about appearances, it’s also about how well the office works.
