How to Stay Upbeat During Dark Winter Days

Published on 09/11/2019

During the darkest days of winter, it can seem like the sun doesn’t even bother to burn through the clouds even once.

We get up in the dark, go to work in the dark, and it seems like we go home from work in the dark too.

It can be depressing if you allow it to be.

Of course, even with the most positive of mindsets, winter can cause a bout the blues from time to time. It’s a stressful time of year too, with Christmas and New Year looming, a huge amount to do, and cold weather to do it all in.

It’s no wonder that we sometimes sit at our office desks and stare out the window, wishing it was summer again.

If you’re someone who regularly finds themselves in the middle of a winter blues bout, check out this infographic for some useful ways to drag yourself out of it.

Whilst you’re sitting around the modern boardroom tables, collaborating on a project, it can be easy to allow the darkness of winter to cause the mood in the room to lower. The key? Arranging your workplace to boost morale, no matter what the time of year.

Yes, we tend to go to work and come home from work in the semi-darkness at least, but that doesn’t mean everyone needs to be down in the dumps! The last three months of the year are fun-filled, with the festive season around the corner, social outings looming, and coffee stores are stocking festive beverages!

So, how can you arrange your office to ensure that everyone stays upbeat during those winter months?

Look at Your Decor

Is your decor generally quite dark, or is it uplifting? Think about adding in some splashes of colour, maybe some new artwork, or you could think about adding in some new office plants to boost the mood and improve air quality.

The walls around you can easily affect the way you feel, and if they’re bright, colourful and fun, it’s not hard to absorb that energy yourself.

Get Plenty of Fresh Air And Natural Light

Whilst it might be cooler outside now, it’s important to have plenty of fresh air and natural light. That means having the window open just a little, or making sure that you head outside for a break every now and again. This will give you a good focus boost but it will also help you to feel better overall too.

You could also look at the lighting in your office and make sure that it’s not too dark or too bright, as this will certainly impact on how employees feel whilst sitting at their sleek modern office desks!

Plan Something Fun

The festive season is almost upon us and that means planning your work’s Christmas outing! Nominate someone to do the honours, or put together a group to share the workload. Having something to look forward to will boost morale and help you feel far more upbeat when the sun certainly isn’t shining.

Eat a Healthy And Balanced Diet

You’re not going to feel wonderful in yourself if you’re binging on comfort foods because it’s dark outside. Instead, focus on a healthy and balanced diet and you’ll see how much better you feel as a result. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, and enjoy treats in moderation. You should also make sure you’re getting plenty of exercise, and if you can head outside to it, you’ll also benefit from natural light as a result!

The winter months might be a lot darker than the summer ones, and certainly much colder, but that doesn’t mean they need to be depressing and constantly dark. Find ways to inject a little out of season sunshine into your days and you’ll notice that your mood is on the up.
