Listen to Your Employees - What Can You Do Better?

Published on 30/06/2021

No business does everything right.

No manager is perfect.

There are always going to be situations you can learn from and do better next time. However, if you’re not willing to listen and find out which situations could have been handled better, how will you ever learn?

If you want to support mental health in the workplace and ensure that your employees feel safe, happy, and supported during their days at their office chairs, it’s time to sit up and listen to them.

Check out this video which gives some very useful advice on how to listen better.

Managers have a lot on their plates, we get it. However, when employees are unhappy, dealing with problems, and struggling with workplace stress, how can they be expected to focus on their work, be productive, and ensure that the business hits its targets?

They can’t.

If you want your business to succeed, you need to take care of and invest in your biggest asset - your employees. Mental health in the workplace has to be extremely high up on your agenda and the single best way to find out what you need to do more of and less of, is to ask your employees and listen to what they say

Of course, the problem is that there is still a very unfair stigma around mental health issues. Many people feel that they should keep it to themselves and just deal with it, out of fear of being judged. That type of situation needs to be kicked out for good.

If that’s the case in your office, it's time to take notice. Create an anonymous survey and ask your employees to fill it in. Make sure that it is extremely what you say it is - anonymous. Then, ask what they feel you could do better as a manager and as an organisation as a whole. What do they need or want to feel more supported in the working days?

We all think that we’re good at listening but unless you ask the tough questions, you’re never gong to learn what needs to be done.

The other thing? Make sure that your employee know that your office door is always open, either literally or metaphorically. Employees should feel that if they want to talk about something, they can. This should be completely without judgement and with empathy and care.

We all need to listen more!
