The Importance of Calm in an Office Environment

Published on 29/10/2021

Have you ever tried focusing and concentrating on a task when everything around you feels like a scrum? Perhaps it feels like you’re sitting in the middle of a bustling Wembley Stadium prior to a gig while you’re trying to focus on your next task at your office desk!

Basically, it distracts you and it makes you feel stressed. When that type of situation happens, it’s not possible to focus and it will make you far more likely to make mistakes. What you need is a calm working environment so you can focus, get your work done, and not feel like the top of your head is about to blow off in the process!

A minimalist office gives you that type of atmosphere. It doesn’t mean there isn’t any office furniture in there and noise is echoing off the walls, instead, it means that the space is calm and chilled out. People can meander through the space without causing a problem to anyone else who’s trying to focus. As a result, everyone gets along better and nobody goes home at the end of the day feeling totally overwhelmed and worried about the task they didn’t manage to complete.

Minimalist office space design basically means that you create the office in a stripped back and calmer way. You don't need endless amounts of office furniture and you don't need countless filing cabinets holding way too much paper. If anything, you go paperless instead.

A calm office is healthier for everyone. It’s also far more productive too. When employees feel relaxed in the office, they will have a much more positive outlook on their work. Employees are less likely to end up in the middle of a conflict too, because when people are relaxed, they’re far less likely to accidentally snap at one another or misunderstand a small comment.

Put simply, a calm office environment is a more productive and healthier one.

Of course, in the middle of a large open plan office, calm isn’t always easy to find but again, minimalism could help to promote it. It’s all about having the right mindset and that’s easier when the entire office reflects it.

We need to focus on reducing workplace stress and anxiety as much as possible. Employees shouldn’t spend their time at their office chairs worrying about everything and feeling overwhelmed. So, by promoting a calmer atmosphere via the office design, stress is naturally reduced.
